The AVI index is characterized by the hydraulic resistance to the vertical flow of water through the geologic sediments lying above the top of the aquifer. The AVI map is constructed by calculating the logarithm of the hydraulic resistance of the lithology from water well records and correlating these values with other surficial geology information. The resultant map identifies polygons of equal vulnerability.
