The Middle Shuswap River Sensitive Ecosystem Inventory (SEI) was initiated in 2006. Mapping at a scale of 1:20,000 and survey intensity level four was completed according to the Standard for Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping in British Columbia. Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM) is used as a base to develop the SEI theme. The project includes Wildlife Habitat mapping themes for seven at-risk wildlife species.

The Middle Shuswap River SEI was initiated in 2006 to provide inventory information on rare and fragile ecosystems that can be used for ecologically sustainable land use and development planning. The study area includes a swath varying from about 200 m to over two kilometres on either side of the 29 km of the middle Shuswap River between the Wilsey and Sugar Lake (Peers) dams and approximately two kilometres up Cherry, Ferry and Woodward Creeks, and some areas below Wilsey dam. The study area includes part of the Northern Okanagan Highland Ecosection (NOH) and the Shuswap Highland Ecosection(SHH) and two biogeoclimatic variants, the Shuswap Moist Warm Interior Douglas-fir Variant (IDFmw1) and the Shuswap Moist Warm Interior Cedar Hemlock Variant (ICHmw2).
Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM) is used as a base to develop the Sensitive Ecosystems theme map. A model assigned Wildlife Habitat Ratings (WHR) for seven at-risk wildlife species to different ecosystem units from the TEM. These ratings are displayed on wildlife habitat maps for Western Toad, Western Painted Turtle, Northern Rubber Boa, Western Skink, Flammulated Owl, Western Screech-owl and American Badger
The inventory was compiled through aerial photograph interpretation and field sampling in the summer of 2011. Draft ecosystem mapping was completed in 2006 and was revised in the fall of 2011 following field sampling. Mapping at a scale of 1:20,000 and survey intensity level four was completed according to the methods in Standard for Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping in British Columbia.
