Abstract: The following report was prepared at the request of the Prince Rupert Forest Region's Protection Section for the annual Burn Boss Field Training Course. The fire management philosophy in our Forest Region supports the concept that staff should base management decisions on a sound understanding of the principles involved, and be able to integrate their own knowledge and experience into decision making. The report should be read before the class presentation and discussion. The first section covers general concepts of soil properties and their relationship to site productivity. This material is the basis for understanding the effects of fire on soils, which is discussed in the second section.
