Abstract: Height growth curves to age 26 years are developed and compared for Douglas-fir, Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and western redcedar planted on four different sites within the Windward Submontane Maritime Wetter Coastal Western Hemlock (CWHb1) variant on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Douglas-fir was taller than all other species in all sites, followed in turn by western hemlock, Sitka spruce, and western redcedar. It was also noted that salal competition for nutrients may have impeded the growth of most tree species, and that stem defects were prominent in Douglas-fir and Sitka spruce. The developed juvenile height growth curves, which are similar in shape to selected published growth curves, should be useful in evaluating early stand growth, and in determining height growth in immature stands within the CWHb1 variant.
