Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) and western redcedar (Thuja plicata Donn) seedlings were grown in a greenhouse and subjected to four dormancy induction treatments - long-day dry, long-day wet, short-day dry and short-day wet - during mid-summer. Seedling shoot development was monitored during the growing season and through the fall. Seedlings were then tested with a comprehensive stock quality assessment procedure just before late winter field planting. Next, they were field planted on both a farm field site and a coastal reforestation site, then monitored for physiological response and morphological development over the first growing season. Morphological development was also monitored during the second growing season on the coastal reforestation site. Although western redcedar seedlings did not show any physiological or morphological response to nursery cultural treatments, western hemlock did.
