Abstract: The FSP project, Linking Multiple Indicators of Biodiversity, has been underway for two years as of March 2006. The initial project was focused on developing modeling tools to project stand structure across landscapes to predict effects of variable retention on availability of habitat elements over the landscape. The second year was to add modeling scenarios and link the habitat elements to more species by summarizing the 5 years of monitoring data collected by Weyerhaeuser. Due to challenges the accompanied shifts in company ownership we altered the emphasis of the second year of the FSP to focus on the data synthesis side (specifically for forest birds) rather than the modeling side. Together with first year results, we have a package that discusses projection of effects of variable retention on stand structure and on forest birds and on Lobaria lichen. The broad goals of this project are: 1) to be able to project the 3 biodiversity indicators used by Weyerhaeuser (indicators of ecosystem representation, habitat structure and species), through time and under alternative management scenarios, and, 2) to integrate these indicators, with the ultimate idea of being able to account for how Weyerhaeuser?s management actions will, or will not, sustain species across their tenure. During the second year of the project Weyerhaeuser was sold to Cascadia, and now is being sold to Western Forest Products. The shift in ownerships has seriously impacted the project such that we do not have access to the in kind resources we initially had, nor the direction to address specific questions, nor the commitment to looking at implications of results. As a result, during this unsettled period we did not ask FSP to fund the potential 3rd year of the project. This report outlines what we accomplished during the project?s 2 years. Most of the work is described in detail in a series of technical reports, appended, and referred to in this summary. prepared by Dave Huggard, Laurie Kremsater, Glen Dunsworth, Kurt Raynor, Nick Smith, Steve Northway, Fred Bunnell, Bill Beese.
