Final report for predictive rare ecosystem mapping on the PGTSA Timberline Forest Inventory Consultants Ltd.

Abstract: The objective of this project was to develop and validate a model for identifying potential locations of rare and sensitive ecosystems through a predictive method. Based upon the results (i.e., frequency/abundance, map accuracy etc.) of the predictive mapping, a strategy for field verification of rare ecosystem Element Occurrences (EO?s) was developed. This project was to provide a foundation for a series of field verification programs in the different Forest Districts. The field verification was kept separate from this project as field work will be designed differently, depending on the Forest District and the condition of the input data for that Forest District. This project utilized a predictive methodology, which relied on Predictive Ecosystem Mapping (PEM) and Vegetation Resources Inventory (VRI) data. These PEM coverages were used as an input data source for predicting the location of potential rare and sensitive plant communities in the PGTSA. Upon field verification of these preliminary maps, the potential rare ecosystem maps are then intended to be used to guide future conservation and management strategies related to rare plant communities.
