Abstract: A trial was designed to monitor the ingress and mortality of high stand density regeneration occurring after the 2003 wildfires on three sites on Tree Farm License 15 in the south Okanagan area of British Columbia. The trial design was six randomly located sample points in each of three cutblocks that were salvage harvested in early 2004. Each sample was a cluster of four contiguous 8 x 8 m plots each containing four 1 x 1 m subplots. The idea is that after the trees grow and increase in size, measurements can be expanded to the 8 x 8 m plots from the smaller subplots. The trial is also designed so that some of the samples (or individual plots) in each block can be randomly selected for juvenile spacing in the future. Delayed approval for this project, the corresponding late start, and early snow resulted in only two of three sites being installed this fiscal year. The third site will be installed in the next fiscal year but in the same growing season (i.e., early spring before germination begins). Trees were measured in all six samples in Site 1 but snow in the highest elevation sample of Site 2 (sample 6) prevented counting the seedlings in several of the subplots. The trees in those subplots will be counted when Site 3 is installed in early spring of 2006. All planning and GIS work was done in Year 1. The measurements showed an average stand density of about 260,000 trees/ha on Site 1 and 450,000/ha on Site 2. Individual plots (average of the four 1 x 1 m subplots) showed stand densities up to 900,000/ha on Site 1 and 1,600,000/ha on Site 2. Densities in the 1 x 1 m subplots reached 1,500,000/ha on Site 1 and 2,200,000/ha on Site 2. Species composition was almost pure Douglas-fir (Fd 98% and Py 2%) on Site 1. Site 2 was leading in larch with a mix of other species (Lw 52%, Fd 27%, PL 12%, Sx 8%). The species composition on Site 2 varied among samples from almost pure lodgepole pine, leading in spruce, to the larch dominated mixes. This project will be completed in the 2006/07 fiscal year. Measurements in the one sample of Site 2 will be completed and Site 3 will be installed and measured. The final report will then be completed with remeasurement of the plots planned for the end of the 2007 and 2009 growing seasons. J.S. Thrower & Associates Ltd.
