Development of a GIS procedure to evaluate the sensitivity of stream ecosystems to increases in fine sediment P. Beaudry and Associates Ltd.

Abstract: The Stream Crossing Quality Index (SCQI) was used in a pilot project, in the summer of 2005, to assess the size of sediment source hazards associated with stream crossings in the Ft Nelson Forest District. The SCQI was identified as a potential ?water quality? indicator for Canfor?s Sustainable Forest Management Plan (SFMP) in the Ft Nelson Defined Forest Area (DFA). The results of the pilot project were positively received by all members of the public advisory group and it was decided to maintain this indicator on trial, at least for another year. Given the vast area of the Ft Nelson DFA and the difficulty in accessing much of it, Canfor recognized the need to define an objective process to prioritize future SCQI sampling efforts. It was also identified that there was a need to define a process to prioritize those crossings that were assessed with high scores (i.e. high sediment source hazard) so that erosion and sediment control (ESC) maintenance works could be planned and executed in a cost effective manner. To achieve the dual goals of a) effective planning for future SCQI field surveys and b) effective planning for future erosion and sediment control work, a procedure to identify the most sediment sensitive streams was required. With such a procedure in place, the SCQI surveys and the ESC maintenance works could be focused on those areas assessed as most sensitive. This report describes the process to develop such a procedure and the application of the procedure in the Ft Nelson DFA. prepared by P. Beaudry and Associates Ltd.
