Prior to 2006, little was known about the status of the Williamson's sapsucker, Sphyrapicus thyroideus, in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia. This document reports on a project undertaken in 2006, through Tembec Industries Inc., to locate Williamson?s sapsuckers in the East Kootenay and to characterize their nesting habitat. This inventory was focused primarily on five areas in the Rocky Mountain Forest District: Area A - Kimberley south to Lumberton, Area B - the west side of the Koocanusa Reservoir, Area C - Whiteswan Lake, Area D - the Gilnockie/Ward Creek area and Area E- the Flathead Valley. Within the five areas, priority sites were chosen based on earlier reports of sightings and on a predictive model (Gyug 2006a) which prioritized stands with a western larch component as Priority 1 (larch >200 years) and Priority 2 (larch 141-200 years). No randomly selected areas were included in the inventory.
