International Forest Products Ltd. (Interfor) has initiated the creation of a First Nation information database covering their Sunshine Coast TSA operating area. A key component of the database is a direct link to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) that permits spatial representation of site specific areas of cultural importance, including traditional use, which can be continually updated as new information becomes available. The project falls under the umbrella of the Forest Investment Account (FIA) Land Based Investment Program, Information Gathering and Management component. The project involved two phases. Phase I included extensive research of cultural information that was made available to Interfor, including traditional use, as it relates to site specific areas of interest. Phase II consisted of populating a blank copy of the First Nation database application that has been provided by the Ministry of Forests and Range (MOFR), North Island Central Coast Forest District (NICCFD) with the information that was collected from the Sunshine Coast TSA operating area. Site specific information was also entered into a GIS data set. A cultural interest or inventory map was then created which depicts spatial representation of potential cultural heritage resources.
