The Relationships among Road Density, Habitat Quality, and Grizzly Bear Population Density in the Kettle-Granby Area of British Columbia Mowat, G.

Abstract: During the summer of 2015, grizzly bears were surveyed in the Kettle-Granby grizzly bear population unit to help assess population status and map the distribution of bears within the unit. Results suggest that the grizzly bear population in the Kettle-Granby area increased in size and expanded its summer range between 1997 and 2015. A positive relationship was found between grizzly bear density and habitat suitability, and a negative relationship between grizzly bear density and road density. Maps of grizzly bear habitat quality, road density, and grizzly bear density were used to suggest areas where access management could provide the greatest increase in bear density or connectivity with other occupied areas.
