Abstract: The purpose of this project was to analyze A Decision-Making Procedure for Streamside Management on Vancouver Island (Moore, 1978) and promote its use within the Vancouver Forest Region field staff. The analysis was intended to identify any problems with the procedure and address a number of potential solutions. The first edition of the Streamside Management handbook was designed as an aid to site specific streamside management. It was intended primarily for use by industry staff, but can be used by anyone engaged in streamside management in the field provided they are familiar with the procedure. By applying on-site information, the handbook can be used to derive a management strategy based on the value of the streamside for an identified user. At present, the Fish and Wildlife Branch and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans do not have the staff necessary to field inspect every streamside situation prior to boundary approval. Therefore, the handbook is provided as an aid to industry and Ministry of Forests field staff who lack the expertise necessary to properly assess the value of the streamside for resource users other than forestry. Several small problems and errors were identified as a result of the analysis, but no gross mistakes were revealed concerning the data base and its application. The most serious difficulty suggested by the analysis was the doubt expressed by some members of each group concerning the accuracy of the field information collected by other agencies or concerning the willingness of other agencies to accept the results obtained. A format change, modification of some of the explanations, and several small additions to clarify the procedure were the only revisions made. However, further testing should be concerned with implementing and monitoring the procedure. The analysis was completed in the summer of 1979 and published in 1980 by the Ministry of Forest's Information Services Branch. The publication is jointly sponsored by Research Branch and the Vancouver Forest Region. The handbook, "Streamside Management. A Decision-Making Procedure for South Coastal British Columbia", is available through the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Information Services Branch. The handbook is No. 1 in the Land Management Handbook Series. REFERENCES Moore, M.K. 1978. A Decision-Making Procedure for Streamside Management on Vancouver Island. Research Branch, B.C.
