Environmental maintenance follow-up and re-treatment work for Barriere Plateau, Barriere River Watershed, Kamloops Forest Region: project completion abstract Milne, Michael J.

Abstract: The objective of this environmental maintenance project was to improve on existing drainage restoration and deactivation work completed in 2002 on the Barriere Plateau. Maintenance of two-wheel drive access into known sheep grazing camps, and erosion and sedimentation from water management structures were primary considerations. Environmental values at stake include water quality, and salmonid fish habitat in the Barriere River system. Pre-implementation risk to water quality and fish habitat was moderate. This risk has been reduced to low as a result of the touch-up work completed in 2003. Routine Effectiveness Evaluation (EE) conducted in July 2003 revealed deficiencies in 27 of the 1200 +/- water management structures built or installed in 2002. Deficiencies related to erosion and scour, difficult vehicle access, and sites that were not completed in 2002 on account of heavy road frost. Armour was not applied to all structures in 2002, as runoff estimates were difficult to attain based on dry conditions at the time of prescription and works, and changes in streamflow volumes that were to result from upslope drainage restoration work.
