The Primary focus of the 2002-2003 FIA, Benthic index of Biological Integrity (B-IBI) program is to provide the Bulkley / Cassiar Forest District a forest management effectiveness monitoring and evaluation program, specific to aquatic resources, to be designed for the Bulkley TSA. This will be the third year of this multi-year project, focusing on monitoring and assessing the response of water quality and aquatic life to forest harvesting activities. This assessment has been done through the development and testing of the Benthic Index of Biological Integrity system and the Alaska Stream Conditioning Index for use in the Bulkley TSA. In order for this information to be of use for the District, this monitoring program will address the following issues: The effectiveness of individual forest practices on a site scale. The effectiveness of forest management systems on a watershed scale. Trends in aquatic resource conditions. The information and assessments generated in a project such as this will dovetail with the implementation of adaptive management systems being developed for the Region. The goal of this project is to finalize the development of a system to monitor the effectiveness of forest practices in protecting water quality and aquatic ecosystems in the Bulkley TSA. This results based forest management system will have applicability in 3 areas: Regulatory and strategic planning goals related to protection of valued aquatic resources, including fish and domestic drinking water. Performance based forest product certification system development.
