This paper examines the potential for red alder to be managed as a commercially viable species within the North Coast TSA. It reviews current inventories, age class distributions, the silvics of red alder and makes recommendations (including treatment regimes and best practices). It attempts to quantify the potential volume available now and in the future. Shortfalls in the existing data have been identified and recommendations to improve the base information have been included. The paper identifies that there is potential for deciduous management, however additional work is identified and recommended to enable this potential to be more accurately quantified. Kim Haworth
