Abstract: Our previous screening program at PFC had identified white pine seedlings with several resistance mechanisms including dominant gene resistance (R). These are being used to build seed orchards. To improve and sustain the genetic resistance in white pine, it is essential that we understand how the basic working of resistance mechanisms in white pine operates to blister rust. We propose to characterize the various resistance mechanisms of white pine to the rust fungus. We will isolate and functionally analyze resistance genes with the ultimate purpose of pyramiding different resistance mechanisms into western white pine. Abul Ekramoddoullah.
