Abstract: Two subspecies of mountain beavers occur in British Columbia: the red listed Aplodontia rufa rufa and blue listed A. r. rainieri. Their current distribution and population trends are poorly understood. The influence of forest management practices on mountain beavers is unknown. The proposed research will significantly improve our understanding of the ecology, population dynamics and habitat associations of mountain beavers, as well as the influences of forest management activities on their population dynamics. Some of these forest management activities may enhance critical habitat for this species of concern. This information is required to direct appropriate strategies to protect critical habitats Douglas B. Ransome .
