The objective is to investigate opportunities to extract the maximum value from the BC alpine fir resource by exploiting the attributes of the species and breaking down the logs for value-added products. Converting a 10% of the projected annual alpine fir lumber production (150 million board feet) to value-added products commanding US$100/mfbm premium will represent an additional value of US$15 million to the BC economy. The project will determine the within tree fibre characteristics using a CT scanner and detailed property measurements, study yields and qualities of veneer and lumber, and generate the science-based knowledge to explore opportunities for producing high value products.
