Native plant salvage harvesting trial Mitchell, Darcy A.
2003

Abstract: This project will examine the economic and ecological feasibility of native fern and moss harvest on North Vancouver Island. Using various levels of whole plant salvage prior to timber harvest, it will determine the effects of the salvage on the cutblock regeneration. The study will explore the market organization and demand for salvaged plants, and the economic feasibility of fern and moss salvage for North Island industries. The project will train local entrepreneurs in methods of sustainable harvest, and assist in production and market familiarity, in order to lay the groundwork for an ongoing local salvage industry. The project will assist the communication between NTFP and forest industries, leading to greater levels of co-management. The study will contribute to the small but growing information body on the sustainable harvesting potential of NTFPs and therefore to future policy management. Mary Bernard.
