Abstract: In the dry Douglas-fir forest of the interior of BC, commercial thinning is a tool for managing deer habitat, fire hazard and forest health, because the manipulation of stand structure and density enhances the stand structure and vigour. The CCLUP relies heavily on thinning to achieve mule deer objectives. Economic viability of thinning is questioned because of low volume and small piece size. This proposal seeks to determine the economic viability of commercial thinning in two stands, and the hazard of doing nothing. The investigation includes harvest costs and product values. Existing pre-harvest baseline data will for habitat response to be documented in the future. J.K. Day...[et al.]
