Development of a site index map of relative wood density for Douglas-fir on Vancouver Island Stoehr, Michael U.

Abstract: A pilot study showed that relative wood density (RWD) can drastically change from site to site. The goal of this study is to identify areas on Vancouver Island that naturally produce wood of high wood density, regardless of volume growth potential (i.e., site index for height). If these areas can be defined and mapped, fast growing genotypes can be deployed on these without sacrificing reductions in RWD, as there is a negative correlation between height growth and RWD in a tree. Knowing which areas can produce high RWD wood will allow the woodland manager to deploy site-specific families to optimize volume and value of wood produced per site. Michael Stoehr.
