Abstract: The development of management regimes for Natural Disturbance Type 4 (NDT4) stands on TFL 15 was initiated three years ago. These regimes are based on the Douglas-fir (Fdi) Protocol developed in 1999 for the Merritt Timber Supply Area. The protocol uses site and structure classification to group stands into units with similar management objectives. For TFL 15, site classification is based on enhanced TEM mapping and structure classification on enhanced forest cover inventory. This report provides detailed management recommendations for the NDT4 area on TFL 15. This area includes the IDFxh1, IDFdm1, and PPxh1 subzones. Since there are only 514 ha in the PPxh1 recommendations developed in 2003 will be used for this subzone. Preferred silviculture systems and alternatives are provided to cover a range of stand structures, forest health issues (particularly dwarf mistletoes [DM]) and to meet the objectives of the Okanagan Shuswap Land and Resource Management Plan (OSLRMP). Landscape level issues including mule deer winter range (MDWR), visuals, sheep and elk range, and hazard to western spruce budworm are considered in determining appropriate management systems. The dry sites of the IDFxh1 fall into the low snowpack zone and under the OSLRMP most silviculture regimes must meet mule deer winter range (MDWR) requirements. The OSLRMP also requires that these stands be managed for greater than 50% Fdi unless forest health concerns dictate managing for other ecologically acceptable species. Due to the potential for western spruce budworm damage, multi-layered stands should be avoided wherever possible. Conversion of leading Fdi stands to mixed Fdi/ponderosa pine (Py) is a priority to reduced the hazard to spruce budworm. Where regeneration of Fdi is not required to meet MDWR requirements, management should focus on regeneration of Py. Some shelter is necessary to regenerate Py but it should not be planted in shade nor should residual stems be maintained where they are overtopped. Western larch (Lw) may also be regenerated on site codes E and F in this subzone. Douglas-fir DM may be present in many stands within this subzone and recommendations are made to limit its spread. There is a greater choice of species in the IDFdm1, where Py, Lw, Fdi, and lodgepole pine (Pl) can all be successfully regenerated. However, DM may be a problem with all species except Py. Management systems should not regenerate shade intolerant species in small openings or maintain them where they are overtopped. Where residual stems are left following harvesting, their impacts on the growth and health of the regenerated stand must be determined and plans for harvesting these stems in the future must also be considered. This report is considered a working document, therefore, recommendations are made to ensure that the protocol remains up-to-date and relevant to forest managers on TFL 15.
