Currently forestry planners and managers lack decision aides to assist in determining the Mountain Pine Beetle attacked stands that are least susceptible or highly susceptible to merchantability degradation and when or if they should be harvested. Knowledge of the rate of merchantability degradation, referred to as ?shelf life?, is required to assess which attacked stands are ?high priority? or ?low priority? in the harvest order. Knowing whether an attacked stand can be left for X number of years in the salvage harvest sequence without severely sacrificing economic viability under various site, stand and manufacturing conditions is important in framing management unit, landscape and licensee strategies. Without this knowledge planning decisions are made daily that may have long term consequences in managing the beetle explosion and will impact future timber supply. Unfortunately no known formal ?shelf life? studies are available to planners.
