Abstract: From 1999 through 2004 Weyerhaeuser conducted surveys to monitor retained forest structure in 193 variable retention (VR) blocks, 98 benchmark unharvested sites (including pre-harvest experimental sites), 19 blocks with old remnant patches, 19 blocks with riparian reserves, 8 older clearcuts and 6 'scrub' sites. Measured habitat attributes included live trees (species, DBH, height), snags (species, DBH, height, decay class), coarse woody debris (CWD; species, diameter, decay class, height above ground), cover layers (canopy, small tree, shrub, herb, moss, litter, mineral soil), dominant shrub and herb species, and site series. Summaries are provided for major types of these attributes and for some important specific structures (e.g., large cedar snags, large well-decayed CWD, etc.). The monitoring design allows several types of comparisons identified as priorities in Weyerhaeuser's Adaptive Management Framework: 1. Comparisons of VR Types 2. Comparisons of VR with Benchmark Sites 3. Relationships with Percent Retention 4. Edge Effects 5. Operational Progress over Time 6. Riparian Areas 7. Anchor Types 8. Older Clearcuts 9. Scrub 10. Remnant Patches 11. Site Series Representation in VR Blocks 12. Changes from 1-5 years Post-harvest. by David Huggard
