Abstract: The Ditidaht First Nation raised concerns about impacts of sediment on spawning success in a tributary to Cheewaht Lake. The tributary was designated as Steam 3 in an inventory report prepared by MC Wright and Associates (2002). Jeff Sandford, FIA Coordinator for Cascadia Forest Products, contracted me to evaluate the conditions in Stream 3 and identify actions that could be taken to reduce impacts from elevated sediment levels in Stream 3. I have been working with Mike Wright, Jim Lane (NTC Biologist) and Ditidaht fisheries workers to evaluate the conditions in Stream 3. MC Wright and Associates completed GPS mapping for approximately 1.5 km of Stream 3 and .9 km of a tributary to Stream 3 in 2005. The mapping started at Rosander Main and ended approximately 100 m downstream from the first crossing of Stream 3 by RM 220. Two field visits were made to the area in 2005 with Mike Wright, Jim Lane and Ditidaht fisheries workers. Mike Wright has provided a 1:10,000 scale copy of the map he completed in 2005. Jeff Sandford supplied a 1:10,000 scale air photo of Stream 3 with the roads and MC Wright updated location of the streams. Glynnis Horel provided me with a 1:20,000 scale map identifying the location of landslides in the watershed up to November 2005. The Horel map uses the TRIM map base. The MC Wright map has adjusted the location of Stream 3 from that shown on the Trim Maps. However, the location of landslides shown on the Horel map are assumed to be accurate. Jeff Sandford also gave me a 1:5000 scale map of the watershed along with results of fish sampling carried out by Sea-Mount Consulting on May 5, 2004. The Sea-Mount report refers to the stream as No. 4 but I will use Stream 3 because this is the name used in previous reports. The map provided by Sea-Mount shows a more complex system of stream channels than the other maps provided to me. Mapping issues are discussed later in the report. Bill Pollard and Associates.
