Abstract: This document summarizes the results of the inventory, research, and extension program initiated on western screech-owls (Megascops kennicottii macfarlanei) along the Shuswap River from April 2005 to March 2006. The broad goals of this project are 3-fold: 1) collect scientific data needed to understand the conservation threats facing western screech-owls and use this to develop effective habitat conservation measures, 2) engage landowners that can play a role in conservation through outreach and extension activities, and 3) monitor program effectiveness. We used call-playback methods to assess the presence of screech-owls at 44 sites within the research study area and 37 sites elsewhere within the project area during 2005 and 2006. We identified 8 sites within the research area and 1 site elsewhere in the project area at which we detected 1 or more owls. We determined that there were at least 3 pairs that successfully produced young in the research study area in 2005.
