Abstract: There is no change from the original proposal, copied below: In this project we propose to develop a ?package? of readily accessible extension and professional development education materials on the compatible management of timber and non-timber forest products (NTFPs; meaning all of the harvested botanical and mycological species of the forest excluding conventional timber) for forestry and other resource professionals. The need and demand for compatible management of the full range of forest resources continues to increase in importance as the value of NTFPs to local communities and to the province as a whole becomes more apparent, and communities choose, or are forced, to pursue additional and/or alternative strategies for generating income. Recent reports and conferences have highlighted a growing recognition of the role NTFPs can play in community stability and health (e.g. http://www.ntfpvictoria2005.ca/, http://www.fpb.gov.bc.ca/news/releases/2004/05-25.htm). Our research and that of colleagues elsewhere in North America indicates that forestry and other resource professionals generally lack accurate and detailed information for making informed decisions about the compatible management of timber and non-timber forest resources (Titus et al. 2004). Further, the on-line survey on compatible management activity in British Columbia, developed as part of the British Columbia Forest Science Program project, Critical Information for Policy Development and Management of Non-Timber Forest Products in British Columbia: Baseline Studies on Economic Value and Compatible Management (Y061065), has generated over 220 responses to date, 20% of which were from major timber licensees. This response signifies the interest in, and demand for, better and more accessible information on compatible management methods. A key challenge for resource managers is that the body of knowledge that currently exists around this topic is generally scattered in the literature and among a diverse group of practitioners, is continually and rapidly evolving, and often difficult to locate and access. This project will make a significant contribution to making knowledge available in an area ? compatible management ? of growing importance for forest management. Over a 3 year period, we will work with our partners and clients to develop the Timber/NTFP Compatible Management cluster on the Royal Roads University Centre for Non-Timber Resources NTFP web site (http://www.royalroads.net/ntfp/). This cluster will build on previous activities of the Centre, including the on-going development of an interactive database and the repository of a broad range of NTFP-related information, to create a ?one-stop? website for resource managers and others seeking information on NTFPs. Current research at the CNTR includes projects that help to provide the framework and expertise to ensure the success of this proposal. These include the British Columbia Forest Science Program project, Critical Information for Policy Development and Management of Non-Timber Forest Products in British Columbia: Baseline Studies on Economic Value and Compatible Management, and the Sustainable Forest Management Network project, Commercial development of non-timber forest products and forest bio-products: critical factors for success. Included in the compatible management cluster will be a variety of extension products that reflect the wishes expressed by resource managers for information that is readily accessible as well as responsive to their need for practical, applied knowledge on this topic. These products will include a collection of case studies focused on specific timber/NTFP compatible management issues (e.g. timber and pine mushroom compatible management; the ecological and socio-economic basis for Nisga?a timber/NTFP management; the collection of NTFP economic data for specific sectors/geographical areas) of importance to crown land and private land managers, including First Nations, ...
