Abstract: The lower 800 m of the Awun River mainstem channel was prioritized for treatment in a watershed assessment completed for Western Forest Products Inc. in 2002. Instream large woody debris volumes were low in the treatment reach as a result of removal during past logging activities and limited recruitment over time. Spawning and resting areas for fish were described as limited. Addition of LWD was recommended. The addition of LWD by hand from regenerating riparian areas on the was prescribed by MTE Inc. of Tlell, BC at five sites on the lower Awun River between Massett Inlet and the Awun Mainline road crossing. Mature second growth trees were marked, directionally felled into prescribed locations, and then adjusted by hand using a Tir-for Jack and hand tools. Debris pieces were secured by retaining a minimum of two thirds of the stem length on the bank to prevent movement. No cable was prescribed.
