Abstract: In November and December of 2009, BC Timber Sales (BCTS) areas of Graham Island in the Haida Gwaii Forest District were assessed using the 2008 fish passage protocol for closed-bottomed culverts by FINS Consulting Ltd. of Terrace. This project completed assessments of BCTS watersheds on Graham Island that were partially covered in 2008 FPCI by Marine Toad Enterprises of Tlell. Within the Rennell Sound, Tlell, Honna River and Collison watersheds, 462 sites were assessed to complete coverage of the BCTS areas. These watersheds exhibit a wide range of stream crossing practices and fish habitat. Most of the high value habitat streams are crossed with bridges and wooden box culverts which provide safe fish passage. There were 42 sites with closed bottom structures on known or potential fish streams that were recommended for remediation of fish passage barriers. However, many of these sites do not have confirmed fish presence and many do not show up on TRIM mapping. An additional 19 sites were recommended for works due to sedimentation or safety concerns. Recommendations resulting from this project include proceeding with remediation of seven fish passage barriers sites, fish inventory for unconfirmed areas, remediation of sedimentation and safety issues, and deactivation options.
