Abstract: Slender yoke-moss (Zygodon gracilis) is a small to medium-sized, yellowish to brownish-green moss that grows on dry vertical rock surfaces. This moss species was designated as Endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) as it is only known from an extremely small population at a single location in North America on Haida Gwaii, British Columbia. Imminent threats include quarrying; potential overgrowth of the species by cyanobacteria, lichens, and ferns as a result of shading and other alterations to environmental conditions by young trees; inundation by tsunamis; and alteration of humidity, precipitation and temperature regimes from ongoing droughts and temperature extremes associated with climate change (COSEWIC 2019). This species is not yet listed in Canada on Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act (SARA). In British Columbia, slender yoke-moss is ranked S1S2 (2015) (critically imperilled to imperilled) by the B.C. Conservation Data Centre and is on the provincial Red list. There is one occurrence in British Columbia, on Haida Gwaii, and this occurrence is found within the wet hypermaritime Coastal Western Hemlock (CWHwh) biogeoclimatic subzone. The overall goal of the recovery strategy is to recover slender yoke-moss in Canada by improving the resiliency of the one known extant population , as well as any additional occurrences that are found, through management of human-caused threats.
