Caribou within the Southern Mountain National Ecological Area of Canada, known as the Southern Mountain Population (SMP), were listed as Threatened by COSEWIC in 2002. Sections 32 and 33 of the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA), which came into force on June 1, 2004, contain general prohibitions against killing, harming, harassing, capturing, or destroying the residence of a listed species. A recovery strategy has identified general principles and evaluation criteria under which hunting could be maintained for a caribou herd in the SMP. The Itcha-Ilgachuz caribou herd, located in south-western BC, was conservatively estimated at 3138 animals in June 2003. It is one of two herds within the SMP that continues to be hunted and has been identified as a source herd for transplants to augment endangered herds in the SMP. The objective of this study was to conduct a population viability analysis of the Itcha-Ilgachuz herd and to assess the risk to the herd by removal of animals through translocations and harvesting
