Abstract: Annual index site monitoring of the Chilko River steelhead fry population was conducted by the Fish Habitat Improvement Section, October 6 and 7, 1982. Estimated steelhead fry population was down 45%, from 653,000 in 1981 to 360,000 in 1982. Population size was not reflected by annual adult escapement indicators or by differences in environmental conditions. In spite of the population size reduction, fry stocking at this time was not recommended. The fry population even at reduced levels was not considered a significant limiting factor to adult population size, given present escapement levels (< 1,000). Recommended future work includes clarification of the resident trout/steelhead composition, and standardization of annual steelhead escapement indicators.
