Abstract: Juvenile sportfish distribution and abundance in the Mitchell River system was assessed in September 1988. Rainbow trout fry were distributed throughout the upper accessible portion of the mainstem Mitchell River and in Penfold and Cameron Creeks. Dolly Varden fry were found in Penfold Creek. Juvenile rainbow trout production capacity from the Mitchell River to Quesnel Lake was estimated at 2400 to 10,000 migrants annually. The outlet of Mitchell Lake was identified as the primary area for production of rainbow trout juvenile recruitment to Mitchell Lake. Dolly Varden populations were found only in the upper Mitchell River and in an unnamed tributary. Potential impacts of a proposed sockeye salmon enhancement project on trout production are discussed.
