Abstract: Age and growth studies of fish based on analysis of scales, otoliths, fin rays and other bony structures of the fish body have become firmly established as useful techniques for fisheries management and research. The objective of this circular is to describe, step by step, appropriate methods for collecting and preparing scales, otoliths and fin rays. It is not the intention to discuss the interpretation of these structures, as this is well documented elsewhere and would vary considerably among fish populations.
