Big Silver is a large coastal creek located 30 km north of Harrison Hot Springs, a two-hour drive east of Vancouver. Despite extensive habitat, low numbers of resident rainbow trout (<20 per ha; fork length >20 cm) inhabit the river, with migratory fish (mountain whitefish, Dolly Varden, cutthroat trout, and six species of salmon) limited to the lower 6 km by water falls. This oligotrophic river (specific conductance 13-18 µS/cm, SRP<1µ/L, NO2+3<100 µg/L) was fertilized with liquid ammonium polyphosphate (10-34-0% by weight N-P203-K20) to examine the feasibility of low-level inorganic fertilization as a method of increasing fish populations in rivers negatively influenced by past logging practices and/or overfishing. A pre-fertilization assessment was conducted in 1992-93 with fertilizer added during the summers of 1994-97 to meet a target instream concentration of 5µP/L. Each summer, field measurements of water flow, temperature, nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll a accrual, benthic invertebrate biomass a
