Abstract: In order to define the nesting habitat of marbled murrelets, it is important to understand how edges and openings affect their nesting ecology. We investigated the effect of clear-cut edges and canopy openings on the activity, nesting density and reproductive success of marbled murrelets on the Sunshine Coast. Using RIC inventory methods (audio-visual detections), we found higher murrelet detections at forest edges than at paired locations 250 m from edges. However, using tree-climbing search method we found nesting density was two times higher at forest interior sites than at edges. This suggests that audio-visual surveys are biased by increased visibility of birds in open areas. We examined how habitat scale influences selectivity for cover and openings at nest sites. Murrelets selected nest sites on large, mossy branches with high vertical cover. Nest trees were adjacent to significantly larger canopy openings required to access the nest site...
