Abstract: A semi-natural rearing pond was in operation from 1971 to 1978 to increase annual steelhead smolt output of the Coquihalla River. Fish normally requiring three years to attain smolt size were produced in two years through combined artificial and semi-natural rearing (hatchery and pond rearing). A study and evaluation of pond production was conducted from June 1976 to July 1977. Pond rearing was found to be unsuccessful in terms of producing sufficient numbers of smolts to increase meaningful adult returns. Annual yield of "smolts" (voluntary migrants) averaged 1000-5000 while annual return of marked adults was estimated at only 3-5 fish. Survival of naturally produced smolts to returning adults was estimated to be 8-50 times greater than for rearing pond "smolts". Major problems were failure of "smolt-like" fish to migrate, predation of pre-smolts, and poor smolt to adult survival. As a pilot project, the Coquihalla pond was useful in terms of information gained on diet, growth, survival, patterns of outmigr
