Despite the high public profile that Environment has received in fiscal year 1989/90, there has been no additional staff or funds for the Wildlife and Fisheries Habitat Programs. The concepts of sustainable development are widely accepted but little has changed to put the principles into practice. Thirty-nine new staff positions for enforcement of environmental regulations signal a "get tough" approach but stresses remedial rather than a pro-active approach to habitat protection. Forestry development continues to be the major issue in habitat protection. Wildlife staff participated in the Range Review program. Recommendations for reduction in annual allowable cuts for the Williams Lake Timber Supply Area have gone to the Chief Forester, but no decision has been reached. Regional Wildlife and Habitat plans are underway to articulate the Wildlife Program's habitat needs.
