Biochemical variants detected by electrophoresis were used to identify three major groups of steelhead stocks as they passed through the southern BC commercial net fishery. In 1978-80, an average of 58% of the steelhead intercepted in this fishery were from interior fall-run stocks native to the Thompson and Chilco Rivers. The proportion of interior stocks increased as the season progressed from 33% in July to 81% in September. Coded wire tag data was used to confirm the absence of large numbers of analogous stocks from upper Columbia River tributaries.
