Abstract: Riparian areas are a neglected and poorly understood component of the total ecosystem. Partly because it is difficult to determine the extent and size of riparian areas and partly because they represent such a small amount of the total land base, research and management actions specific to riparian areas are only now being encouraged. As the intensity of land management in this province increases, demands on riparian areas are expected to accelerate, and resource use conflicts will almost certainly become more problematic. As a first step in determining research and education needs and developing appropriate management methods and processes, the BC Ministry of Environment and the BC Ministry of Forests jointly sponsored ESSA Environmental and Social Systems Analysts Ltd. to conduct a problem analysis on the integrated resource management of riparian areas.
