Abstract: Management of arboreal lichens as a forage resource requires methods for measuring their abundance and growth rates. Inventory techniques and biomass sampling techniques for mature stands are reviewed, methods for monitoring the abundance of lichens in immature stands are discussed. Special problems encountered by researchers include non-normal distributions, high variances, and many zero values. Methods for monitoring growth rates include use of photometrics, studies of biomass on dated twigs, and successive weighing of air-dried thalli. Recommendations focus on applications to the management of deer winter ranges on Vancouver Island.
