Concern for wildlife in the management of second-growth stands on Vancouver Island has increased recently as more and more of the island comes under intensive silvicultural management. The heightened awareness of the problems of integrated management of forests and wildlife on Vancouver Island prompted the Ministries of Forests and Environment to initiate a 5 year project, called the Integrated Wildlife-Intensive Forestry Research (IWIFR) program, for research on the effects of silvicultural practices in second-growth stands on wildlife populations.
