In British Columbia, deltoid balsamroot (Balsamorhiza deltoidea) is restricted to southeastern Vancouver Island. These populations represent the northern range limits of B. deltoidea. Of the 14 sites for B. deltoidea in British Columbia, all but three sites are located in the Victoria area. Populations at five sites have been confirmed in recent years but the status of populations at four other sites remains uncertain. However, it is almost certain that populations at five additional sites are extirpated. Threats to existing populations vary in intensity. Although some populations are protected to a certain extent from direct habitat destruction, introduced species pose a serious threat to the continued existence of most populations particularly those that are few in number and consist solely of mature plants. Managing sites for B. deltoidea is difficult given the lack of information regarding the biology and ecology of this plant, its competitive interactions with other species, and factors controlling the e
