Abstract: There have been nine confirmed sightings of Sharp-tailed Snakes (Contia tenuis) in British Columbia, and three reliable reports; 11 of these sightings have been on the southern Gulf Islands and the southern tip of Vancouver Island, while one was recorded on the Thompson Plateau northeast of Kamloops. Sharp-tailed Snakes on the coast have been recorded from the drier sites of the coastal Douglas-fir zone; further work must be done in the interior to confirm its occurrence and determine distribution. The secretive nature of this species has limited our understanding of its numbers in British Columbia, its habitat requirements, and limiting factors for population and distribution. The loss of old-growth Douglas-fir forests and urban spread has probably caused some population declines, but there is evidence (from British Columbia, Oregon and California) that Sharp-tailed Snakes have adjusted to at least some of the changes that have occurred within these forests over the past 125 years.
