Annual index site monitoring of the Chilko River steelhead fry population was conducted by the Fish Habitat Improvement Section and Regional staff, September 13 and 17, 1983. Estimated total steelhead fry population was 665,000 compared to the adjusted estimate of 668,000 in 1981. The increasing trend in the 1983 fry population compared with the 1982 estimate of 304,000 is more closely related to varying environmental conditions and indicators of adult escapement than the 1981/82 comparison. Resolution of resident/steelhead composition and standardization of annual steelhead escapement records are recommended to provide a better understanding of the Chilko River steelhead population.
