Abstract: The abundance and variety of the fish and wildlife populations of British Columbia are outstanding on a world level. In order to maintain these resources, it is necessary to reserve some areas of important habitat for the management of fish and wildlife. The Wildlife Act, proclaimed in 1982, provides the authority for the Minister of Environment, with Cabinet’s approval, to do this through the establishment of Wildlife Management Areas (WMA). The purpose of WMAs is to allow the effective management of important fish and wildlife habitats in order to achieve the objectives of the Ministry of Environment for fish and wildlife resources. There will be few WMAs, and their total area will constiture only a fraction of the area of the province. A process to designate land as a WMA is proposed in this discussion paper.
