Abstract: This is one of a series of keys to the vascular plants of British Columbia (excluding Ferns and Fern allies). It is hoped that this simplified key will help field workers to overcome their reluctance to identify members of the economically and environmentally important grasses. The key will serve as a practical introduction to the more complete keys of formal manuals. The key initially points to major groups or tribes of grasses, each of which is treated separately leading to the genera. Additional characteristics are then added at the final steps to further characterize the genera. The illustrated key runs parallel to the written key. A descriptive and illustrated glossary is included for the whole key. The selection of genera included in the key is based on the authors' field experience of frequently encountered genera. Although this key will readily permit field workers to differentiate grass genera in the field, the final identification must be verified using the formal manuals.
