Mountain goat populations in the Kootenay suffered a severe decline during the 1960's. Management data avilable at that time are presented: regulations, hunter numbers, harvest, success, sex ratios in the harvest, and some age class data from game checks. Until 1971, no downward trends in harvest, success, sex ratios, or age class structure were discernible. Based on a subjective knowledge of the situation, seasons were reduced and area closures instituted from 1966 on, with the season finally being closed in 1972.
