This document, Strategic Direction for Habitat Protection, presents a vision and direction for protecting and managing British Columbia's habitats, ecosystems and biodiversity.
This strategic plan contains:
- A mission statement, which states the primary objective of the Habitat Protection Program,
- Five primary goals that the program intends to achieve, and
- strategies - the means by which we plan to achieve our goals.
In the early 1970's, the British Columbia government recognized the need to expand management of wildlife and fisheries resources to include protections of habitats. In 1974, the Habitat Protection Section was added to the Fish and Wildlife Program. Since that time, Habitat staff from Victoria and regions have worked to maintain and protect habitat.
